Reevaluating The Crucial Contributions of Pharmacy Technicians: A Comprehensive Review
Abstract
Pharmacy technicians are pivotal to the functionality of modern pharmacies, yet their contributions are often overlooked or undervalued. This comprehensive review reevaluates their roles and highlights the factors contributing to their underutilization in various settings. We explore the evolving demands of pharmacy practice, emphasizing the disconnect between these demands and the current scope of pharmacy technician roles. Through an analysis of their responsibilities in community and chain pharmacies, as well as their broader contributions to healthcare, this study seeks to recognize and elevate the status of pharmacy technicians. The findings underscore the necessity of redefining their roles to align with contemporary healthcare needs, thereby enabling pharmacists to focus on direct patient care. Finally, the paper proposes an integrated framework to optimize the use of pharmacy technicians, facilitating their development and advancing pharmacy practice on a global scale.
